Abstract
This study aims to describe the portrayal of urban women in the novel Viral by Laili Muttamimah, focusing on their worldview, socio-economic status, and lifestyle. The study employs a sociology of literature approach with a descriptive qualitative method. The data consist of relevant linguistic units in the novel, collected through reading, marking, and data inventory techniques, and analyzed through classification, interpretation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the portrayal of urban women is reflected in ten aspects of thought: viewing career as a form of contribution, valuing friendship, being education- and information-oriented, pursuing success, prioritizing personal fulfillment, constructing an image of intelligence and modernity, being financially and technologically literate, maintaining health awareness, and emphasizing safety and comfort. In terms of socio-economic status, differences are evident between the characters Ariel and Wendy. Urban lifestyle is characterized by self-image orientation, prestige, media influence, café culture, virtual life, stress management, and instant-oriented practices. These findings highlight the complexity of urban women’s dynamics within the context of modernity.
