Abstract
This study analyzes expressive speech acts as representations of the speaker’s emotions in the novel The Lady Escort by Kinanti WP. The researcher employed a descriptive qualitative approach to identify speech categories based on Searle’s theory and speech strategies according to the Brown and Levinson framework. The data were sourced from dialogues between characters, which the researcher collected through observation and note-taking. The results indicate that the characters tend to use nine expressive categories, with a predominance of expressions of gratitude, apologies, and praise. From a communicative strategy perspective, the use of positive and negative politeness serves as the primary pattern for maintaining social harmony. These findings demonstrate that language choices in literary narratives function as psychological instruments for building relationships between characters. This study contributes to the development of literary pragmatics, particularly regarding the relationship between emotional intent and face-saving tactics in prose texts.
