Abstract

This research is motivated by the representation of gender dysphoria experienced by the character Sasana in the novel Pasung Jiwa by Okky Madasari. Gender dysphoria refers to a condition in which an individual experiences a mismatch between their perceived gender identity and their biological sex. This study aims to describe the forms of gender dysphoria, its causal factors, and its impacts on the character Sasana. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a mimetic approach. The data consist of words, phrases, sentences, dialogues, and narrative descriptions related to gender dysphoria in the novel. Data collection techniques include reading, note-taking, and data inventory, followed by analysis based on forms, causal factors, and impacts. The findings show that Sasana’s gender dysphoria is manifested through the desire to possess female physical characteristics and cross-gender behaviors reflected in clothing choices, activities, and social roles. The causal factors include psychosexual and social factors. The impacts experienced by Sasana are social rejection and anxiety. This study indicates that gender dysphoria in Pasung Jiwa is influenced by the interaction of psychological and social factors that shape the character’s gender identity.
