Abstract
This study analyzes social class in Titie Said's novel Deana pada Suatu Ketika, focusing on Deana, an upper-class woman whose status declines due to HIV/AIDS stigma. The novel reflects Indonesian social stratification, showing that wealth and networks don't always protect against discrimination. The study describes forms, shaping factors, and impacts of social class on characters' lives. Using qualitative descriptive analysis with a sociological approach, primary data from the novel (2004) and secondary sources were inventoried (narrative, dialogue, actions) and analyzed using Max Weber's and Soerjono Soekanto's theories. Results show three social classes—upper, middle, and lower—shaped by economic factors, social status, and networks. HIV/AIDS stigma reduces Deana's social status and mobility despite her wealth, leading to fewer opportunities, altered social standing, and conflicts from discrimination. This study demonstrates that social class is dynamic and vulnerable to stigma. Findings aim to reduce prejudice against marginalized groups and foster an inclusive society.
