Abstract
Hikayat Cekel Wanengpati BR 175a is a Malay manuscript housed in the National Library of Indonesia. Previous research has largely focused on philological aspects, neglecting its intrinsic literary elements. This study describes the characterization of the central figures in Hikayat Cekel Wanengpati BR 175a using a structural approach. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the research analyzed narrative units from the manuscript depicting characterization. Data, collected through close reading and note-taking, were analyzed by identifying characterization based on Burhan Nurgiyantoro's theory and examining its relationship with the narrative structure. The manuscript features two central characters: Raden Inu Kertapati and Raden Galuh Candra Kirana. Raden Inu Kertapati is characterized as brave, responsible, and humble, while Raden Galuh Candra Kirana is portrayed as faithful, resilient, and compassionate. Their characterization, constructed through dramatic and expository techniques, develops the plot, strengthens conflict, and reinforces themes of struggle, loyalty, and sacrifice. This study strengthens structural analyses of classical Malay manuscripts and expands scholarly discussion of Hikayat Cekel Wanengpati BR 175a beyond its previous philological focus.
