Abstract
This study describes adherence to and violation of linguistic politeness maxims in the comment section of the TikTok account @lisapresleyofficial, based on Leech's (1993) politeness theory. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the research data consist of utterances from netizens' comments on selected high-interaction posts between May and April 2025. Data were collected via observation and note-taking. Analysis involved classifying utterances according to Leech's (1993) six politeness maxims: tact, generosity, approbation, modesty, agreement, and sympathy. The study identified 50 instances of politeness maxim usage: 16 cases of adherence and 34 cases of violation. Adherence included the approbation maxim (10) and sympathy maxim (6). Violations included the approbation maxim (29), modesty maxim (1), and sympathy maxim (4). The generosity and agreement maxims were not found. Violations of the approbation maxim were most dominant, indicating that interactions in the @lisapresleyofficial TikTok comment section often lacked politeness and involved negative judgments in digital communication.
