Abstract

This study was motivated by the use of conversational implicatures in comic strips on social media, specifically on the @sampahisasi Instagram account, which convey meaning indirectly through dialogue between characters. The purpose of this study is to describe the types of conversational implicatures, the themes of the conversational implicatures, and the functions of the conversational implicatures found in these comic strips. The method used is qualitative descriptive with a pragmatic approach. The research data consists of utterances in comic strips containing conversational implicatures, totaling 100 data points. Data collection was conducted using the observe-and-record technique, while data analysis involved classifying the data based on the type, theme, and function of the conversational implicatures. The results of the study indicate that there are three types of conversational implicatures: general (21%), specific (71%), and scalar (8%). The thematic content of the conversational implicatures consists of social (49%), moral (24%), educational (15%), and ideological (12%) themes. Meanwhile, the functions of conversational implicatures include representative (23%), directive (38%), expressive (29%), commissive (8%), and declarative (2%). The implications of this study suggest that comic strips on social media can serve as a medium for conveying social, moral, and educational messages indirectly through conversational implicatures.
