Abstract

This study discusses the application of the principle of politeness in expressive speech acts in the comments column of the Instagram account @najwashihab. This study uses a pragmatic approach to analyze the form of speech and the application of the principle of politeness in netizen interactions. The purpose of this study is to describe (1) the principle of politeness in expressive speech acts and (2) the context of the speech situation that underlies the use of expressive speech acts. The method used in this study is a qualitative method with the technique of listening freely and engaging in conversation (SBLC), recording, and taking notes. The data are in the form of netizen comments on the posts of the Instagram account @najwashihab in December. The results of the study show that 161 data of expressive speech acts were found, with the dominance of sympathy speech 105 data, followed by praise 36, thanking 17, congratulating 3. In terms of the principle of politeness, the maxim of sympathy is more dominant than the maxim of praise. The context of the speech situation is influenced by the setting and scene, participants, ends, key, and norms. These findings indicate that netizens' speech reflects empathy and concern in communication on social media.
