Abstract

This study aims to describe: first, how the level of kinship, second, the length of separation time, third, the sound correspondence between Minangkabau language in Kanagarian Sungai Tarab District Sungai Tarab Tanah Datar Regency and Riau Malay language in Kelesa Village Seberida District Indragiri Hulu Regency. This research is a quantitative and qualitative research with the field of comparative historical linguistics. The object of this research is the Minangkabau language spoken by the community in Kenagarian Sungai Tarab, Sungai Tarab District, Tanah Datar Regency and the language spoken by the Riau Malay community located in Kelesa Village, Seberida District, Indragiri Hulu Regency. The data of this research from sources that are oral and written. The data used in this study are basic vocabulary guided by the Morris Swadesh vocabulary list and basic vocabulary guided by the cultural vocabulary list of the two languages. There are three findings in this study. First, based on the percentage of kinship level between the two languages is 67%. Second, based on the calculation with glotochronology technique, the separation time of the two languages is 4,207 years ago. Third, identical pairs of 121 vocabularies, one different phoneme of 4 vocabularies, compression of 4 vocabularies, substitution of 47 vocabularies, reduction cluster of 63 vocabularies, compression of 4 vocabularies, afferesis of 11 vocabularies, and split of 91 vocabularies are the evidences of sound correspondence found in the research between Minangkabau language in Sungai Tarab and Riau Malay language in Kelesa village.
