Abstract

This research aims to describe the structure and social function of classical fable folklore of Minangkabau people in Nagari Balah Hilia Lubuk Alung District Lubuk Alung Padang Pariaman Regency. This type of research is literary research within the framework of folklore using descriptive methods. The data of this research is the folklore of classic fables of the Minangkabau community in Nagari Balah Hilia Lubuk Alung District Lubuk Alung Padang Pariaman Regency. The data were collected by (1) recording the folklore of classical fables of the Minangkabau community, after recording the data was transcribed and transliterated; (2) collecting data on the storytelling environment using observation, recording, and interview techniques. The data in this study were analyzed using four stages, namely (1) data inventory, (2) data identification, (3) data classification,
(4) discussion and conclusion of data analysis results. The results of the research are as follows. First, the structure of classical fable folktales of Minangkabau society consists of (1) orientation, which is the story of animals that in ancient times could speak like humans; (2) complications, which are problems or conflicts such as challenging attitudes of other animals and problems within animals; (3) resolution, which is the resolution of problems carried out by animal characters by using reason and carrying out an idea; (4) coda, which is a moral message or called a parable story in Minangkabau. Second, the social function of classical fable folklore in Minangkabau society consists of (1) entertaining in leisure time, happy situations, and inviting laughter together; (2) educating through animal parable stories; (3) passing on to the next generation; (4) identity for the community that owns the story.
