Abstract

This study aims to describe the strategy and context of expressive speech acts of praise performed by the hosts in humor podcasts on YouTube. The focus of this research is the expressive speech strategies of praising and the context that occurs in speech events by using the theory of context analysis in communicative speech SPEAKING from Dell Hymes. This research is a descriptive qualitative research with pragmatic approach. The data are in the form of speech acts of the hosts containing expressive speech acts of praise taken from 4 humor podcast channels on YouTube, namely PODKESMAS, PWK (Podcast Warung Kopi), Agak Laen, and VINDES. The data collection technique is done by listening and recording method, while the data analysis technique is done by classifying the type of speech strategy and describing the speech context based on SPEAKING analysis. The results show that out of 162 expressive speeches of praise, four types of speech strategies are found, namely the straightforward speech strategy without pleasantries as many as 92 speeches (56.8%), the positive politeness straightforward speech strategy as many as 41 speeches (25.3%), the negative politeness straightforward speech strategy as many as 24 speeches (14.8%), and the vague speech strategy as many as 5 speeches (3%). Meanwhile, the strategy of speaking silently was not found in this study. In addition, this study also found eight speech contexts in accordance with the SPEAKING model components, namely Setting and Scene, Participants, Ends, Act Sequences, Key, Instrumentalities, Norms of Interaction and Interpretation, and Genres. In conclusion, the most dominant speech strategy is the straightforward speech strategy without pleasantries, which shows that the hosts use a direct approach to build closeness with guest stars and audiences, and the speech context supports the creation of an intimate and relaxed atmosphere typical of the humor podcast genre.
